Sixty years ago today, delegates to the Republican National Convention selected Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater as the party's nominee for President.
The choice of ultra-conservative Goldwater was in many ways a reaction to the domestic agenda of civil rights and public welfare put forward by incumbent President Lyndon Johnson.
