On July 16, 1945, the United States performed the first test of an atomic bomb at the Trinity test site near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
In a matter of weeks, similar devices would be dropped on Hiroshima, then on Nagasaki, bringing the Second World War to a horrifying end.
